Job Appreciation Day with our Managing Director, Gavin Money

Job Appreciation Day with our Managing Director, Gavin Money

At the NWH Group, we're all about family. We work together and we value each other’s contributions. That's why we love having our Job Appreciation Days and spending a day getting to know different colleagues across our varied team!

Our Managing Director, Gavin Money, recently spent the day with one of our tipper drivers, Daniel Fergie, as they made their way to various sites and jobs around Edinburgh. Throughout the day, Gavin observed clear instructions given and received by Daniel, his calmness, attentiveness, and sheer skill.

Gavin’s experience began at 6:30 a.m. on a chilly Monday morning at our Mayfield site, where he joined Daniel for a full day of operations. Their first task was to deliver a preloaded shipment of aggregate to a site near Tynecastle in Edinburgh’s city centre.

Gavin quickly gained an appreciation for the scale of the job as he watched Daniel skilfully navigate the large tipper truck through city’s tight streets. Gavin said: “Daniel’s ability to reverse into the requested space at Tynecastle was quite a spectacle – a great demonstration of skill and awareness.”

After completing the delivery, they headed to another site in the Marchmont area, where they were involved in a project to support infrastructure improvements for Scottish Water. This particular job required moving materials between various nearby locations and transporting them back to our Yard 2 aggregate recycling facility in Mayfield. Throughout the day, Gavin observed Daniel’s ability to follow detailed instructions from the site foreman and his calm, attentive nature as he managed every task with precision and care.

Gavin couldn’t help but be struck by the teamwork on display. Whether it was the communication between Daniel and the site foreman, or the conversations with other drivers and the transport office over the radio, there was a strong sense of collaboration. As Gavin listened in on the two-way radio conversations, he saw firsthand the respect and teamwork that went into every aspect of the day’s work. He was especially impressed by how the team handled any challenges with professionalism and a problem-solving mindset.

Gavin commented: “I was so impressed by the calmness, attentiveness, and skill of Daniel through the day – nothing was ever a problem and wanted to make sure we were delivering for the customer and NWH.”

After a series of shuttle runs between Marchmont and Mayfield, the customer requested one final load, bringing the day to a close at 6:30 p.m. After a full 12-hour shift, Gavin reflected on the experience and how it had deepened his appreciation for the incredible skill, awareness, and dedication of our drivers.
