The Greenest of Bins are Blue

As one of the UK’s leading recycling and waste management businesses, our mission is to change our industry for the benefit of the planet. We are committed to creating a sustainable future by improving the social, economic, and environmental wellbeing of our communities and it is for this reason that we are delighted to be launching the next stage of our green programme. 

Through a series of internal initiatives and external partnerships, we have set out a number of goals to support the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including becoming carbon negative and supporting the creation of sustainable jobs.

To kick off this campaign, we are delighted to have partnered with sustainability experts, Carbon Footprint Ltd to audit our business. This greenhouse gas emissions audit provides a baseline from which we will set the targets required to achieve our carbon negative goal. It will inform our internal and external initiatives including campaigns to educate employees, customers and other stakeholders on the green programme and its targets, as well as projects surrounding our fleet and site electricity usage.

We launched the first of these initiatives this month by pledging to move our fleet to electric and hydrogen powered vehicles and as a result have already switched 5% of our vehicles.

But our green programme goes further than just the environment. A key priority for us is to ensure we are creating sustainable jobs for the future. As part of this promise, we have joined forces with Entrepreneurial Scotland through a donation of £10,000 as well as hosting a marketing intern through the charity’s world-class Saltire Scholar Programme.

We have also increased the number of driver apprenticeships available each year by 300% to grow the pool of drivers available and the business has set the bold target of securing 20% of its workforce by 2025 through its own apprenticeships and development programmes as well as sponsored scholarships.

We are a progressive business, and we believe innovation can play a major part in not only bringing in improvements in efficiency for the benefit of our customers but also helping support both parties’ sustainability objectives.
