Behind the Scenes at Celtic Stadium: The Recycling Edition

At the NWH Group, we pride ourselves on fostering strong relationships with our clients, and our partnership with Celtic FC is a shining example of collaboration and commitment to sustainability. Celtic Park, the home of Celtic FC, is not just a hub for thrilling matches but also a bustling venue that faces unique challenges in managing waste and recycling during high-footfall events.

Recently, we spent a match day behind the scenes at Celtic Park to better understand the dynamics of waste management on one of the busiest days in the stadium’s calendar. Here’s an insider look at the recycling efforts, challenges, and teamwork that keep Celtic Park running smoothly.

Match Day Operations: A Team Effort

Our day started with a visit to the offices of Chris Winning, Janitorial Lead, and David Stothers, Soft Services Manager, two key figures in Celtic FC’s waste and cleaning operations. These monthly account reviews provide invaluable insights into the day-to-day challenges of maintaining cleanliness and order across the stadium.

From noon until well after the final whistle, we shadowed Chris Winning and his team. Their responsibilities on match day are vast, from managing bins and spills to addressing queries from the public, catering staff, and hospitality teams. It’s a seamless operation that requires constant vigilance and adaptability, especially given the scale of the crowds.

Waste Streams at Celtic Park

Effectively managing waste at a venue as dynamic as Celtic Park requires careful planning and collaboration. The stadium’s vibrant match day operations involve multiple activities, each generating unique types of waste:

Kiosks (Operated by Sodexo): These serve thousands of fans, resulting in recyclable materials like foil wrappers, waxed cups, cardboard, wooden stirrers and forks, along with general waste like crisp packets and food waste.

Celtic Pools/Scratch Cards: Scratch cards and other materials generate paper waste around the stadium, both inside and outside.

William Hill Bookmaker Stands: Betting stands contribute to paper waste generated during matches.

Hospitality Areas: With seven bustling hospitality zones, ensuring proper waste segregation can be complex. Many areas rely on temporary staff, making consistent waste separation a challenge amidst the fast-paced environment.

These waste streams reflect the diversity and scale of operations on match day. By partnering with Celtic FC, we’re focused on implementing tailored solutions to optimise recycling and reduce environmental impact, all while supporting the stadium’s vibrant fan experience.

Addressing Challenges in Waste Segregation

Celtic FC is committed to promoting recycling and waste segregation, both among fans and within the stadium. However, the unique demands of match day operations can present logistical challenges. Quick turnarounds between games—sometimes just three days—mean cleaning teams must work swiftly to prepare the stadium for the next event.

Additionally, with many match day staff being temporary agency workers, there is limited time to provide comprehensive training on recycling protocols. Understandably, at the end of long shifts, some workers may prioritise speed over waste segregation, leading to occasional misplaced materials.

Despite these challenges, the dedication of Celtic FC’s core cleaning and facilities teams is evident. They consistently go above and beyond to guide and support staff, working diligently to ensure waste is managed as effectively as possible. By continuing to strengthen processes and partnerships, there’s an ongoing commitment to improving waste segregation and sustainability at Celtic Park.

Building Strong Relationships

The day wasn’t just about observing operations—it was about strengthening relationships. Spending time with the soft services team, meeting supervisors, and engaging with the Sodexo catering team provided a deeper understanding of their challenges and aspirations.

We also had the opportunity to guide agency staff in the compound area, where most bins are stored, on proper waste disposal practices. By working closely with the team, we reinforced the NWH Group’s commitment to supporting Celtic FC in their recycling goals.

Our visit underscored the importance of collaboration in tackling waste management challenges. Celtic FC’s dedication to improving sustainability is clear, and we’re proud to support their efforts through tailored solutions that align with their unique needs.

Together, we are working to enhance recycling practices, reduce contamination, and move closer to achieving shared environmental goals. As a trusted partner, the NWH Group is committed to providing ongoing support and expertise to ensure that Celtic Park remains not only a legendary sports venue but also a leader in sustainable waste management.

Let’s continue this journey towards a greener future—one match day at a time.
