Frequently Asked Questions

Simpler Recycling is a government-led initiative designed to standardise waste and recycling collections across England. The goal is to make recycling easier for businesses and improve sustainability by ensuring a consistent approach to separating and disposing of recyclable materials. The Simpler Recycling regulations come into effect on 31st March 2025. By this date, businesses must have the necessary waste separation systems in place to remain compliant.

The legislation applies to all businesses and non-household organisations, such as schools and hospitals, that have 10 or more full-time employees. Regardless of how many employees are on-site at a given time, if your business exceeds this threshold across multiple locations, you must comply with the regulations.

To comply with Simpler Recycling, businesses must separate the following materials:

  • Food waste
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Plastic
  • Paper and cardboard

These materials must be collected in separate bins to prevent contamination and ensure they can be recycled effectively.

Most businesses will need multiple bins to comply with the new regulations. This typically includes:

  • A bin for paper and cardboard
  • A glass recycling bin (if applicable)
  • A bin for metal and plastic recycling
  • A food waste bin
  • A general waste bin

The exact number and type of bins required will depend on the nature and volume of waste your business produces.

To ensure a smooth transition:

  • Review your current waste processes and identify areas for improvement
  • Speak to your waste management provider about bin requirements and collection schedules
  • Train your staff on the new waste separation guidelines
  • Monitor and adjust your recycling practices to improve efficiency
