Material Recycling Facilities

NWH Waste Services' industry-leading Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) provide the efficient separation and recovery of recyclable and reusable  materials. This waste management process allows us to segregate recyclable waste products from mixed waste loads received from our  commercial/industrial skip/roro and trade waste collection rounds. Once the materials have been separated they are bulked and sent to various processors to be recycled into their various end products. Our MRFs have an annual capacity in excess of 5,000 tonnes, allowing us to segregate and  process over 90% of the materials passing through them for subsequent recycling.

Did you know that you can tip your materials direct with us?

What materials do the Materials Recycling Facilities recover for recycling?

Where we look to encourage source segregation as much as possible  we understand the complexities of this due to lack of space,  labour requirement or commercial viability .Our MRF allows us to segregate on your behalf where we utilise our  extensive segregation process in our picking stations– where all materialsare rigorously segregated. Recycled materials collected for recovery at our MRFs include:

  • Paper (including newspapers, magazines, catalogues and envelopes)
    cardboard
     Steel and aluminium cans
    HDPE (high-density polyethylene) plastics
    PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastics
    PP (polypropylene) plastics
Mixed plastics (yoghurt pots, food trays, etc)
    Clean plastic films
    Tetra-Pak cartons
    Glass (all colours)
  • Timber
  • Inert
  • Plasterboard
  • Green waste
  • Brick & Block
  • Scrap Metal
  • MDF
  • Cable

How does the process of Materials Recycling Facilities work?

Mixed Waste Materials collected in this manner are tipped at our nearest MRF where they are fed through a series of different pre- sort processes that separate them into their respective clean  material types. Our state-of-the-art segregating technology allows for a greater range of materials to be separated and a higher quality of clean uncontaminated material to be bulked and sent to the processors.

What Materials Recycling Facilities does NWH Waste Services operate?

All of our MRFs work to the same objective of producing as clean, segregated and sorted recycled material as efficiently as possible. The quality standards that we employ in this waste management process are in excess of the minimum required by the re-processors with regard to quality and  presentation. We currently operate three MRFs:

  • Glasgow
  • Edinburgh
  • Dundee

NWH Waste Services has invested in its MRFs to ensure that they incorporate the latest sorting technology available - with each of our facilities using differing combinations of technology to separate the recyclable materials. Typically our facilities use a combination of manual ,mechanical and air processes as sorting functions depending on the material type and density.

We continually strive to improve our Environmental Footprint through innovations such as segregation and recycling  plant on our sites,we convey to the  latest ' Tier 4 ' technology ,this technology not only improves and reduces fuel and emissions when processing materials it allows us to store and reuse the power as and when required.
