NWH Group employee, Chris Kirkwood (22) from Newtongrange, Midlothian, has been named Scotland’s Top Road Transport Trainee of the Year at the Transport News Scottish Rewards 2018. The HGV tipper driver collects his trophy today, 10th November, at the Scottish Rewards presentation at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow.

Chris, who recently completed his Modern Apprenticeship in Driving with NWH Group, joined the business in September 2016 as part of the company’s apprentice scheme. He said: “It was a big surprise to win the award, and I’m absolutely delighted. I’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who voted for me, and to NWH for supporting me throughout my apprenticeship during the course of the past year. Everyone has been so helpful, and really built my confidence and ability to deliver a great job for the company as I progress in my driving career.”

Mark Williams, Managing Director at NWH Group, added: “We were absolutely over the moon to hear that Chris had been voted as Scotland’s Top Road Transport Trainee of the Year. Chris is a real ambassador for NWH Group. His positive, customer-focussed attitude, and approach to teamwork, compliance and safety reinforces our company values and he is a real credit to the business. Well done Chris – we are immensely proud of you.

“In addition to our apprentice scheme, earlier this year, we launched our own ‘Driver Academy’ for people just like Chris. Our aim was to help tackle the industry-wide shortage of HGV drivers – providing new career opportunities and supporting the professional development of our people.

“Not only is this award testament to Chris’ hard work and dedication, but it demonstrates that our investment in people and training is really making an impact on the industry.”
