The NWH Group Driving Academy was formed to help combat the industry wide driver shortage. There is a reduced number of individuals seeking to obtain their Class 2 HGV licence, due to the rising cost of the licence and the difficulty faced in finding work as a newly qualified driver. This is often due to the fact insurance companies do not allow companies to recruit new drivers’ due to risk. As well as being disheartening for drivers, this meant that across the industry, businesses are inhibited from recruiting drivers who are legally qualified to help deliver their services.
NWH worked alongside our Insurance Providers to create the Driving Academy. The purpose of the Academy is to allow us to recruit and train new HGV Drivers by pairing them with an experienced mentor who will assist in their professional development and ensure that they are driving at industry standard before being allowed to drive solo.
Who is eligible for the Driving Academy Apprentice Scheme?
If you are under the age of 25, and have held your car licence for at least 2 years, you are eligible to apply for the Driving Academy Apprentice Scheme. Although, please note, if you have received prior Scottish Government Funding for Education purposes you may not be eligible for the Academy (e.g. Apprenticeship / college course). We will check your eligibility should you reach interview stage.
What are NWH looking for in applicants?
We are looking for driven, committed and flexible individuals who will thrive in a challenging and fast paced environment. No two days are ever the same as an HGV Driver! If you have driving experience in a non-HGV Driving role, this is advantageous, but we do not discount candidates without this. Offering these roles is a chance for us to recruit candidates who are the best fit for the business, and who will be major players in helping us deliver on our missions and customer needs.

2018 Format: This year the apprentice scheme will involve joining NWH at an early stage whilst you are studying to gain your HGV License, complete your medical etc. This will allow you to gain a better understanding of the business, and how the different departments interact with each other.
